valence shell is the last shell of the atom containing valence electrons.this shell is also known as Ultimate shell.
Penultimate shell is the shell just before the valence or the ultimate shell .i.e.,the second last shell of the atom.
this series from the farthest shell to the nearest shell to the nucleus goes as-
1.) ultimate shell.
2.) penultimate shell.
3.) penpenultimate shell.
4.) penpenpenultimate shell.
......and it goes on..

Heya user
Here's your answer !!

_______

The outermost shell of an atom is called the valence shell .

The second outermost shell of an atom or the shell that lies below the valence shell is called the penultimate shell .

For example , the electronic configuration of sodium ( Na ) is 2 , 8 , 1 .

Here the shell that contains 1 electron is the valence shell and the shell that contains 8 electrons is called the penultimate shell .

Generally , electrons are lost from the valence shell but in the transition elements , electrons are also lost from the penultimate shell .

_______

Hope it helps !!
