a variegated leaf is a leaf which have boht green and non green parts. As green parts of a leaf contains chlorophyll they photosynthesize and the non green parts do not contain chlorophyll so the non green parts of leaf do not absorb sunlight so they do not photosynthesize

variegated leaf is prepared by experiment for preparing variegated take a leaf of plant and covered half leaf by black tape and take that plant in sunlight and after few time remove that black tape and we see that part of leaf get fed means there is no starch for photosynthesis means there is lack of chlorophyll and simple leaf have chlorophyll for photosynthesis
