Their functioning was almost same with only difference that Governor General served EIC's ( EAST INDIA COMPANY ) interests whereas Viceroy that of British Crown.
A viceroy has all of the powers of the monarch. Governor General was the head of Indian Affairs of British east India Company Till 1858 .
