Just to add, in case you don't know: A plain text (.txt) file can't contain any formatting. If you start with a .doc or .docx file and save it as a .txt file, the formatting in it is permanently lost. If you open a .txt file in Word and apply formatting to it, you must save it as a .doc or .docx file if you want to keep that formatting.
