Difference between xylem and phloem:
Xylem:
- Function - Vascular tissue that transports water and dissolved nutrients from root to the aerial parts of the plant
- Type - Dead cell
- Location - Center of vascular bund
- Cellular composition - Lignin, cellulose
- Structural composition - Xylem fibers, vessels, tracheids
- Movement direction - Unidirectional
- Support - Forms the bulk of the plants and provides mechanical support.
Phloem:
- Function - Vascular tissue that transports prepared food from the leaves and shoots to the roots
- Type - Living cell
- Location - The periphery of the vascular bundle
- Cellular composition - Phloem sap
- Structural composition - Phloem vessels, sieve tubes, sieve cells, phloem parenchyma, companion cells
- Movement direction - Bidirectional
- Support - Forms a smaller part of plants and does not provide any mechanical support
