Difference between xylem and phloem:

Xylem:  

  • Function - Vascular tissue that transports water and dissolved nutrients from root to the aerial parts of the plant
  • Type - Dead cell
  • Location - Center of vascular bund
  • Cellular composition -  Lignin, cellulose
  • Structural composition - Xylem fibers, vessels, tracheids
  • Movement direction - Unidirectional
  • Support - Forms the bulk of the plants and provides mechanical support.

Phloem:

  • Function - Vascular tissue that transports prepared food from the leaves and shoots to the roots
  • Type - Living cell
  • Location - The periphery of the vascular bundle
  • Cellular composition -  Phloem sap
  • Structural composition - Phloem vessels, sieve tubes, sieve cells, phloem parenchyma, companion cells
  • Movement direction - Bidirectional
  • Support - Forms a smaller part of plants and does not provide any mechanical support
