Difference between zygotene and leptotene:

Zygotene:

  1. The second stage of meiosis 1.
  2. The homologous chromosomes start to pair up.
  3. Synapsis takes place.
  4. Formation of bivalents or the synaptomeal complex occurs.
  5. Karyotyping is not completed.

Leptotene:

  1. The first stage of meiosis 1.
  2. The chromosomes begins to get visible as two distinct threads.
  3. Synapsis does not takes place.
  4. Does not form bivalents or synaptomeal complex.
  5. Karyotyping is mostly done at this stage.
