Difference between zygotene and leptotene:
Zygotene:
- The second stage of meiosis 1.
- The homologous chromosomes start to pair up.
- Synapsis takes place.
- Formation of bivalents or the synaptomeal complex occurs.
- Karyotyping is not completed.
Leptotene:
- The first stage of meiosis 1.
- The chromosomes begins to get visible as two distinct threads.
- Synapsis does not takes place.
- Does not form bivalents or synaptomeal complex.
- Karyotyping is mostly done at this stage.
