TIP: Always draw boxes to make it neat and for better understanding.

Try keeping your differences short but valid so that you can remeber.

Explanation:

CONSOLIDATION OF SOIL

1. In consolidation of soil, strong and static pressure is used which leads to compression of saturated soil.

2. It is mainly used for clayey soil.

3. This is a natural process.

4. Soil volume is reduced by squeezing out pore water from the saturated soil.

COMPACTION OF SOIL

1. In compaction of soil, mechanical pressure is used  to compress the mass of the soil, for the purpose of soil improvement.

2. It is mainly used for sandy soil.

3. This process is intentionally done.

4. Soil volume is reduced by removing air void(space filled with air / trapped air) from the saturated and dry soil.
