Gram positive bacteria:
1) The bacteria remain coloured blue or purple with Gram staining even after washing with alcohol.
2) Outer membrane called glycocalyx is absent.
3) Cell wall is 20-80 nm thick.
4) The wall is smooth.
5) Teichoic acid present in cell wall.
examples: few pathogenic bacteria-
Bacillus, clostridium, Lactobacillus, streptococcus, etc...
Gram negative bacteria:
1) The bacteria do not retain stain when washed with alcohol.
2) Outer membrane, glycocalyx is present.
3) cell wall is 8-12 nm thick.
4) walll is wavy and comes in contact with plasmalemma only at a few loci.
5) Teichoic acid absent in cell wall.
examples: most pathogenic bacteria- E. coli, salmonella, vibrio, etc...
