In order to understand this, let's talk about Ionization Energy (or Ionization Potential). Ionization Energy is the amount of energy required to ionize an atom i.e., to make an atom to lose an electron which means that, lower the Ionization Energy, higher is the tendency of the atom to lose an electron. Alkali metal atoms have a higher tendency to lose electrons than Alkaline Earth Metal atoms. In other words, Alkali metals have lower Ionization Energy than Alkaline Earth Metals. So, Alkaline Earth Metals have higher Ionization Energy.
