there is a special staining technique for Mycobacterium species which is defined as Zeihl-neilson staining or acid fast staining.due to the presence of lipids called mycolic acids.they are initially stained using carbol fuchsin and later decolourised using acid alchohol (1%HCl + Methanol) which washes the carbol fuchsin and again flooded with methylene blue.finally the acid fast appear to be red in colour and the the non-acid fast appear blue in colour.
