Difference of squares of two numbers is 88 the larger number is 5 less than twice the smaller number find the two numbers. Here y cant we take the value as negative???

let the smaller number be x.
and the larger number be 2x - 5

here the sum of = 88
= x + 2x - 5 = 88
= 3x = 88 + 5
= 3x = 93
x = 93 / 3
x = 31

here smaller number = x = 31
the larger number = 2x - 5
= 2 * 31 -5
= 62 - 5 =57
