ionizing radiation

radiation with sufficient high energy can ionize atoms;that is to say it can knock electrons off atoms and create ions.
ionization occurs when an electron is stripped (or "knocked out") from an electron shell of the atom without positive charge.

cosmic redaction
there are two sources of high energy particles entering the earth's atmosphere from outer space ;the sun and deed apace ,the sun continuously emits particles primarily free protons,in the solar wind ,and occasionally augmented the flow hugely with coronal mass ejection.

non-ionizing radiation
is capable of causing thermals ionization if it deposits enough heat to raise temperature to ionization energies.
this reaction occurs at far higher energies than with ionization radiation, which is requires only single particles to cause ionization.
