difference of two numbers is 1400.if 20% of one number is 33 1/3% of the other number find the greater number?

Let, the two numbers are x and y

According to the question :

x - y = 1400......(1)

Also given that : 20% of one number is 33 1/3% of the other

Again according to the question :

$x \times \frac{20}{100} = y \times \frac{33\frac{1}{3} }{100} \\ \\ = > x \times 20 = y \times \frac{100}{3} \\ \\ = > x = \frac{5y}{3} .....(2)$

On putting the value of x in equation (1)

$\frac{5y}{3} - y = 1400 \\ \\ = \frac{5y - 3y}{3} = 1400 \\ \\ = > 2y = 4200 \\ \\ = > y = 2100$

On putting the value of y in equation (2)

$x = \frac{5 \times 2100}{3} \\ \\ = > x = 3500$

Required value : x = 3500 and y = 2100
