Gigantism is a growth defect, similar to acromegaly, the difference betweenthe two diseases being the period in which they occur: gigantism (or giantism) occurs during childhood andacromegaly appears in adulthood. Excessive growth hormone is almost always caused by a noncancerous (benign) pituitary tumor.
