Differences between Short stories and Novels

1.  SHORT STORIES:

These are usually about three pages to 20 pages. These are usually read by the reader in one sitting.  Many of the short stories are included as lessons for school or college students.  Short stories often carry a moral.  They concentrate mainly on one plot in the story.  There are probably one or two main characters. The story revolves around them only.

Short stories do not need a lot of patience. Many short stories are compiled into one book for publishing, in general.

2. NOVELS:

These are usually about 100 pages to 300 pages. They have a lot of plots in the story. The events in a novel take place over years. They describe the settings of the locations where the story runs. They describe the characters in a lot more detail.

Many novels there are a lot of complicated characters. There is some buildup for the hero or heroines.  Novels are more widely read than short stories by adults.  Novels are a pass time during long journeys or vacations. Novels are recommended to students for external reading. But not prescribed.
