Amount of air that remains within lungs after a forced exhalation is called residual volume.
This air participates in gaseous exchange but anatomical dead space volume cannot do so.
The volume of air remaining in the lungs after a maximal expiratory effort. Dead space is the volume of a breath that does not participate in gas exchange.
