FICTION - Generally, fiction means anything imaginary or untrue. In literature, fictions are literary pieces of writing (e.g. novel, novella, story, short story), which's plot is imaginary or untrue.

NON-FICTION - Non-fiction is quite the contary. It is the opposite of fiction.
As a general term, non-fiction means something that is real, and undoubtedly true. In literature, non-fiction is known to be any literary piece of writing which is written based on a true fact, event. Sometimes non-fictions can be biographies or autobiographies of famous men of the past or present.

Similarity(s) - Both are literary pieces of writing.
Difference(s) - They are two opposite things. Fiction is untrue; non-fiction is true. That is the major dissimilarity or difference.

Fiction stories are made up by the writer. They define the writer's imagination. 
Non-fiction stories are always fact-based and genuine.

Differences between Fiction and Non-Fiction

• The difference between fiction and non-fiction is a subject of much debate in education today.  
• There are many definitions of the term but the most common definition is that fiction is literature written by a fictitious character in a fictional story.  
• Non-fiction is the written account of an actual event.
• In fiction, the writer is often a protagonist, and the reader is often an audience member.  
• In non-fiction, the author is not the protagonist.  
• The reader only becomes a part of the narrative.  
• In between these two poles, the reader can interact with the writer in a variety of ways.

Similarities between Fiction and Non-Fiction

• There are many similarities between non-fiction and fiction.
• Both exist with the main goal of creating an illusion of reality.
• Fiction is a form of entertainment, while non-fiction provides insight into a subject.
• The differences between the two are obvious and are made evident by the differences in the books’ titles.
• The similarities between fiction and non-fiction are many, including the use of time travel, the use of multiple points of view, and the inclusion of non-human characters.
