The major differences between Adrenal Medulla and Adrenal Cortex are as follows :
Adrenal Medulla :
1. It is a continuation of the Autonomic Nervous System in which the post-ganglionic fibres are converted to secretory cells. Hence , Adrenal Medulla is developed from Ectoderm.
2. It is located in the inner part of Adrenal gland.
3. Its main function is secretion of catecholamines namely adrenaline, nor-adrenaline and dopamine.
4. It is stimulated in case of stess situations.
Adrenal Cortex:
1. It is developed from Mesoderm.
2. It is located in the peripheral part of Adrenal gland.
3. It has 3 zones and hence secretes 3 types of hormones like
- Mineralocorticoid
- Glucocorticoid
- Sex-corticoids
4. It is also involved in stress situations.
