differences between democratic and nationalist
Answers
Answer:
Nationalism is a spirit while democracy is a constituted system, both may co-exist but not necessarily. Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany had tremendous national spirit but no democracy.
Nationalism is defined as ‘an extreme form of patriotism marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries’ whereas democracy is social political and economic system where there is a ‘government of the people, elected by the people which works for the people’
In application democracy assumes more freedom and power to the citizen through the constituted fundamental rights. In Nationalism the nation is considered supreme and apex and hence all the resources including the citizen are supposed to be employed towards the national interest and therefore, individual tastes, likes and dislikes, priorities etc are secondary in nationalism. In democracy, in case you express any thing against the nation, it will be considered as your individual perception and you are free to do that within limits, however, in a nationalist government the same could be a severe punishable offence. Therefore, democracy is liberal.
However, this does not mean that in democracy the national interest is not important, but it is considered secondary.
