The gravitational force can be thought of as a force pulling you “down” (to the earth's centre of mass). This force is proportional to the mass of the object divided by the inverse square of it's centre of mass from you.

The buoyant force can be thought of a force that is pushing upwards equal to gravity. This force isn't very applicable in minor cases. But in a larger scale it can come in very useful.

One way this is exploited is by using boats. Boats are actually lighter per cubic metre then water and are shaped to keep the surface tension.
