Deccan plateau is the prominent penisular part of India fringed by coastal strips on east & west margins. Northern limit is set by River Narmada & Vindhya range, a low range in isolated stretches, almost aligned to the Tropic of Cancer. River Narmada is the southern edge of Vindhya range. South of Narmada is the Satpura range that is prominent on west & the southern edge of Satpura is Tapti river. All these rivers and hill ranges are aligned parallel in E-W direction. Deccan has wall-like Western ghats to mark western edge, reaching 6000' at places, that catch in summer SW monsoon. Many mighty rivers 'Godavari', 'Krishna' & 'Kaveri' and tributaries. These rivers travers across Deccan plateau from east to west and through wide gaps in Eastern ghats flow to join Bay of Bengal forming broad deltas. There are many swift, short rivers flowing west from Western ghats to join Arabian Sea in west. One such river 'Sharavati' has a fall of 900'. Western ghats abounds in waterfalls. Deccan plateau has average height of a thousand feet. The eastern edge, Eastern ghats are low hills with wide gaps through which the rivers flow. Both these hill ranges meet as a knot of hills, Nilagiris (11 1/2d N / 76 1/2d E). Highest point of Nilagiris is the flat Doddabetta (big hill) at 8760', with the hill station 'Ooty' nearby. There are many big cities on this large plateau - Hyderabad & Bangalore are over 5 million & Pune is a little less. There are half a dozen cities with over a million people.

Malwa plateau is relatively low and small in area on northern fringe of Vindhyas (to the west). The plateau is bound by the well-marked 'Aravali' range to the west. it opens to the north, through which River Chambal flows to join River Yamuna that in its turn flows into Ganga (Ganges). Malwa plateau has an average height of about 400'. Tropic of Cancer passes through its middle. It is drained by River Chambal and tributaries like Betwa, KaliSindh etc. This small area with bracing climate has attracted human settlements & cities. Chief are - Indore, Ujjain, Dhar & Bhopal.
