Parenchyma cell walls are thin whereas the cell walls of sclerenchyma cells are highly lignified and hence thick. The cellscontain cytoplasm whereas thesclerenchyma cells are empty.Parenchyma tissue acts as a packingtissue, provides support to plants and also stores food.

Sclerenchyma is one of the three types of ground, or fundamental, tissue in plants; the other two types are parenchyma (living thin-walled tissue) and collenchyma (living support tissue with irregular walls). Sclerenchyma cells occur in many different shapes and sizes, but two main types occur: fibres and sclereids.

Parenchyma is the bulk of a substance. In animals, a parenchyma comprises the functional parts of an organ and in plants parenchyma is the ground tissue of nonwoody structures
