Radar uses radio waves, which are a type of electromagnetic energy. Sonar uses the echo principle by sending out sound waves underwater or through the human body to locate objects. Because of the different type of energy used in radar andsonar, each has its own applications.

radar detection relies on radio waves which are a part of electromagnetic spectrum and sonar uses sound waves which is mechanical waves
radar is used in atmosphere and sonar is used underwater
There is another difference in how each technology developed and advanced. Sonar is found in nature and many animals have used it before humans developed an application. Bats and dolphins both use sonar in echo-location Radio waves are also a natural occurring phenomenon as they are a part of the electromagnetic spectrum, but they have not been used by other animals
