Syngamy and fertilization are synonyms just the diffrerence between them is that syngamy is the process of fusion of two gametes to form zygote while fertilisation refers to the act or process of rendering fertile.

Answer:

Fertilisation is the process where the male and female gametes unite to form the embryo (egg and sperm) and in IVF-test tube baby process this process of fertilisation is facilitated in the lab.

Normally in natural conception, this process of fertilisation happens in the fallopian tube and then the formed embryo moves into the uterus where it gets implanted and starts growing.

There are 2 ways in which fertilisation is facilitated in IVF in the lab:

The conventional insemination-IVF in which the eggs and sperm are mixed in a petri dish and the sperm spontaneously enter the egg to bring about fertilisation. However, in certain situations such as low sperm count when normal fertilisation may not occur, ICSI is done to facilitate fertilisation.

Syngamy is the process where after fertilisation and formation of embryo, the embryo goes this process where the 2 pronucleus of male and female gamete which are seen after fertilisation is no longer visible and the embryo is getting prepared for the next stage of development ie division of single to 2 cell and then 4 cell embryo. The clinical implication is that in the lab the scientists who perform IVF/ICSI process should check for pronuclei suggesting fertilisation at around 18 hours post mixing of egg and sperm or after ICSI. If not checked at the correct time we will miss this as when embryo enters syngamy pronuclei are not visible.
