The Zamindari system in South Asia, the Haciendas in South America and the feudal system in Europe, are all very similar to one another.
It is an early socio-economic class based system where farmers and their families were kept in 'bonded labour'
Since they were very poor, the only way to earn a living was to work on the land. In return, the land lord would provide them with food and a small income and loans in case a family member had to get married or fell ill. These loans were not easy to pay off, and it could take years and in some cases generations.
If a father passed away, his widow or children would need to work to pay off the loan
