February revolution 1917 made a democratic, republican government with separation of powers between Duma and Soviets, workers councils also formed during 1905 until 1917 but had no political power.  

Main aim of Provisional government was holding elections to Russia's first powerful parliament and Constiuent Assembly.  

Provisional government instituted number of reforms in brief tenure including abolition of capital punishment, reaffirmed freedom of speech.

October revolution made communist dictatorship i.e. USSR laboured under for 70 years.  

Lenin's government as promised transferred "power to soviets" and they became supreme abiters of decision making.  

Lenin's government shutdown Russian Constiuent Assembly after it met for few hours ending hopes of parliamentary democracy in Russia for 70 years.  

Lenin implemented War Communism and started Cheka a secret police who killed at least 12,000 people between 1917 and 1922.
