Differenes in atomic radii of lanthnoids and actinoids
Answers
Lanthanoids cause the atomic radii of elements after them to be much lower than expected, due poor 4f-orbital shielding. This is called lanthanide contractions. Actinoids are all radioactive and most of them are not naturally found on the earth. Both groups have elements mostly in the +3 oxidation state.
Differences between lanthanides and actinides
1. Lanthanides have the ability to show a maximum oxidation state of +4 while actinides show oxidation states of +3, +4, +5, +6 and +7.
2. Lanthanides do not form complexes easily. Actinides have a greater tendency to form complexes with ligands such as thio-ethers.
3. All lanthanides are non-radioactive except promethium but actinides are radioactive in nature.
4. Lanthanides do not form oxocations, but actinides form oxocations such as UO+, PuO+, NpO2+.
5. Most of the lanthanides are colorless in nature but most of the actinides are colored ions.
