In a homogeneous mixture, the entire mixture has uniform composition and appearance throughout, like a mixture of sugar and water. If we take a sample of this mixture from top portion of the mixture, it will have the same composition as the sample taken from the bottom portion.

In a heterogeneous mixture, the mixture doesnot have a uniform composition and appearance throughout,i.e, it's composition varies from region to region, like a mixture of sand / chalk and water. At the bottom portion of the mixture, we find that the percentage of sand/chalk is more than that of water, while at the top of the mixture we see that the percentage of water is more than that of sand/chalk.
