If the direction of both the 'rate of change of velocity' and velocity are same then the 'rate of change of velocity' is called acceleration. If the direction of 'rate of change of velocity' and velocity are opposite to each other then the 'rate of change of velocity' is called retardation.

- i.e Acceleration = Change in velocity / Time taken for change
- ★Negative acceleration is called Retardation.
- if the velocity of the body decrease, the Acceleration will be negative.
Example:
The acceleration of a body is -5 m/s²
then, we can say that the retardation of the body will be 5 m/s².
