Differences between areolar tissue and adipose tissue:

Areolar tissue

Adipose tissue

Consists of different types of cells such as fibroblasts, mast cells, macrophages and plasma cells.

Consist of similar types of cells called adipocytes.

Found beneath the epithelia, between the skin and muscles, around blood vessels, nerves and in the bone marrow.

Found beneath the skin, around the kidneys and other internal organs such as intestines.

Made of gelatinous matrix containing cells and irregularly arranged fibres.

Cells are filled with fat globules situated in a large central vacuole of a cell

Fills the space inside the organs and supports internal organs.

Acts as fat reservoir and insulator of heat.

Helps in the repair of tissues.

Acts as a cushion and provides protection to the internal organs.

Loose connective tissue

Fatty connective tissue

The main difference between areolar and adipose tissue is that the areolar tissue fills the space between organs, supporting internal organs whereas the adipose tissue serves as the fat reservoir and thermal insulator.
