The petals in the flower are collectively called corolla.

The petals are accompanied by a layer of sepals which forms the basis for the growth and flourishing of flower.

The sepals collectively form the salyx and it lies beneath the corolla.

Flowers need both petals and sepals and cannot survive in their absence.
