Answer:

Adenine complementarily pairs with thymine through two hydrogen bonds whereas guanine complementarily pairs with cytosine by means of three hydrogen bonds. The nucleotide base composition of DNA follows the Chargaff's rule where the sum of purines is equal to the number of pyrimidines.

A guanine on one strand will be bonded to the cytosine on the other strand. Similarly, the adenine on one strand will be bonded to a thymine on the other strand. So the Watson-Crick model of DNA uses Chargaff's rule to pair bases and so the two strands of DNA are held together.
