Lattice is an imaginary array of points in space, regular and periodic.

If you have seen a school parade, there will be white chalk dots made on the ground, for students to go and stand there. Though the chalk dots do no represent the parade, it helps in identifying where each students should stand. Similarly, in a crystal, you have this imaginary array of points in 3D space, called the lattice. With each of these lattice points, the motif, the molecule(s) or part there of, that constitute the crystal will be associated.

Smallest part of the crystal which when repeated in 3D space generates the entire crystal is called the unit cell.
