Earlier, homogenous was used as a scientific term, mainly in biology, but now it is almost obsolete, being replaced by homologous. Whereas, homogeneous is a common word, very much in use and means having similar or comparable characteristics.

Homogeneous Mixture :-

  • A mixture is said to be homogenous if all the components of the mixture are uniformly mixed and there are no visible boundaries of separation between them.

  • It is made up two or more substances when they are completely mixed together and do not react with each other.

  • Composition remains uniform throughout.

  • Component of the Mixture cannot be separated by visible boundaries.

  • Example: mixture of salt and water, ethanol with water.

Heterogeneous Mixture :-

  • A mixture is said to be heterogenous if all the components of the mixture are not uniformly mixed and there are visible boundaries of separation between between them

  • Substances remain separated from each other and one substance spreads throughly as tiny particles.

  • Composition doesn't remain uniform throughout.

  • Components of the mixture can be separated by visible boundaries.

  • Examples: Mixture of sand and sugar, chalk and water.
