. “Poly” means many and “ploidy” means set number. Polyploidy is a condition where a cell or an organism contains more than two sets of homologous chromosomes. Polytene chromosomes are gigantic chromosomes containing several thousands of DNA segments.

Interestingly, colchicine is a biochemical used in laboratories for generating polyploidy levels in organisms by causing the immediate arrest of the dividing cells. On the other hand, polytene chromosomes are known to play a functional role in certain cases such as salivary glands.
