Primary succession

It is a kind of ecological succession which occurs from the barren, uninhabited and unoccupied areas, such as the newly formed pond, rock, dunes, etc.

It occurs in a barren area

In the beginning, the environment is unfavorable.

Absence of any previous community.

Time taken for the completion of the process is 1000 years or more.

Secondary succession

It occurs in an area where there was the existence of life previously but got abandoned due to natural disturbances, such as flood, tsunami, earthquake, etc.

It happens in an area, which has been recently got deprived of life and was previously inhabited.

The environment is favorable, since the beginning.

Presence of the previous community use to live in that area.

Time taken for the completion of the process is around 50-200 years.
