A volcanic mountain results from the cooling of magma on or near the earth surface. Volcanic mountains are sometimes sites of active volcanoes.
Residual mountain are mostly a as a result of differential erosion over a period of time. The unstable materials are eroded away leaving the more stable materials standing which leads to the formation of residuals. E.g Monadnock.
