Geothermal energy refers to the heat energy that is radiated by the earth. Geothermal energy can be harnessed from ground that is shallow and not too deep from the surface of the earth to heated water and rock structures located relatively deeper within the surface of the earth. It can also be extracted from molten rocks found deep within the earth.

Wind energy refers to the process of generating electrical energy by means of wind turbines. It is a type of solar energy that transforms the kinetic energy of the wind to mechanical power. The initial cost of setting up a geothermal energy plant is much more in comparison with that of setting up a wind energy plant. Geothermal energy however is the better option when it comes to the operating costs. As far as the availability of the two types of energy is concerned, geothermal energy is incessantly available. On the other hand, if you look at energy harnessed from the wind, it can only be generated when there is adequate amount of wind flowing through the area.

Technologically, the process of directly harnessing the heat generated from resources deep beneath the surface of the earth is very difficult. As a matter of fact, there is no methodology of directly harnessing the energy generated by magma that occurs deep within the earth’s surface.

Hope this was able to throw some light on the differences between the two types of energies.
