The hindbrain has three parts: medulla oblongata; cerebellum; and pons.

The medulla oblongata, also called medulla or myelencephalon, is an enlargement where the spinal cord enters the brain. It contains centres that control several visceral (autonomic homeostatic) functions, such as breathing.

The cerebellum is a dorsal outgrowth of the medulla. In cartilaginous fishes it has anterior and posterior lobes.

The Pons serves as a message station between several areas of the brain. It helps relay messages from the cortex and the cerebellum.
