There are 7 periods and 18 groups in the periodic table. The elements are classified into:
1. Representative elements: The elements of group 1, 2, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.
Elements in group 18 are inert gases. Elements of group 1 are Alkali metals and that of group two are Alkaline earth metals. Group 1 and 2 are in the s block and group 13 to 18 are in the p block.
2. Transition elements: The elements from group 3 to 12. These elements are in d block.
3. Inner transition elements: The elements in the Lanthanide series and Actinide series. They are kept outside the main table because if they were kept inside, it would distort the shape of the table. They are in f block.
Moreover, many types of elements are Metals, Non metals, metalloids, and inert elements.
