Different species use very different strategies to determine the sex of a new born individual.
A process by which a sex of a person is determined is called as sex determination.
There are different types of sex determination in organisms like

Environmental based sex determination.
Genetic based Sex determination:

Environmental Based Sex Determination:
In some reptiles , the temperature at which the fertilized egg is incubation before hatching , plays a very important role in determination of sex of a newborn organism.
for example: In turtle ,high incubation temperature leads to development of female offspring. On the other hand, in the case of Lizard, high incubation results in male offspring.
In some animals like, snails, individual can change sex, indicating that sex is not determined genetically.

Genetic based Sex determination:
For example in Human beings, the sex of individual is largely genetically determined.
In human beings, Sex chromosomes are in Men[XY] in women[XX].
The sex of new born is determined by what they inherit from their father.
X chromosome from father results in Baby girl[X from Mother and X from father]
Y chromosome from father results in Baby Boy[X from mother and Y from father]
In grass hopper [XO-male , XX-female]
