Himachal Pradesh has its own peculiar Architecture ranging from the coldest to the hottest regions , depending on one’s personal interests in building homes and commercial properties. The upper Himachal , as I have discussed in many of my answers, is quite different geographically & culturally from its lower counterpart and same thing applies to home ideas, designs & architecture.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             A remote village

In upper urban areas, it is not uncommon to see highly sophisticated and modern expensive houses duly constructed using costly cedar wood and native brooch rock with fabricated tin roofs. However, in Lahaul and Spitti & few areas of Desert Kinnaur, it is practically important to build such designs which not only keep the residents warmer in long winters but also fullfill their storage needs as there regions are cut from rest of the world in harsh winters. People in these areas build home on a traditional Tibetan architecture and Buddhist artistic impression can be easily seen. They use wide variety of materials to fabricate their houses. The use of stones layers one over another and internal plastering and wood furnishings are common.                                                                                                                                LOWER HIMACHAL HOUSES

The lowers Himachal which consists of primarily the districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una and some Plains of South Western Kangra, Solan and Sirmour, derive the architecture from its upper counterpart and blended with Punjabi culture, presents a unique cultural and modern heritage in house designs most of which are built as per relatively warmer weather to cater seasonal as well as material needs.

The prime requirement is the Wood which is provided by the native trees of varieties of Oaks and Pine. However modern buildings use Construction timber which may either be imported or derived from other available trees. Today, as advancement is on its peak, urban houses may be built using industrial steel at par with that presently being used in Cities across India. Apart from that , basic building materials are Bricks and concrete which is widely used pan Himachal. Moreover, the upper regional architecture is greatly followed in some of the modern architectures. The major example is slanted roofs and rock brooch stones, former is widely usable during heavy rains to drain water and also harvesting it. It is solely a personal choice. Older designs used slates and mixed clay with thicker walls to keep the interior cool even in hot summers. Though, such constructions are rapidly becoming obsolete and gradually diminishing. People prefer using marvel material and modern tiles along with glass frames which are both used in some modern houses and commercial designs.
