Answer:

Phloem is the living tissue which is involved in the transport of organic substances to all parts of plants. Phloem consist of three types of cells, conducting cells, parenchyma cells and supporting cells. Conducting cell in phloem is sieve tubes which are involved in transport of sugar to different parts of plants. Companion cells are one of the type of parenchyma cells. The function of the sieve tube depends on the companion cells as all the function of sieve tubes are carried out by the companion cells. Sieve tube is connected to the companion cells via the cytoplasm of companion cells. Plasmodesmata are present between them.

Thus, the correct answer is option C.

The function of Phloem Parenchyma is-

  • to store food material and other substances.
  • helps in the transportation of food.
  • slow the lateral conduction of food.

The function of Companion cells is-

  • to move sugar and amino acids into and out of the sieve elements.
  • also, maintain the pressure gradient in the sieve tubes.
  • regulate the flow of nutrients.

The function of Sieve tubes is-

  • the transport of carbohydrates and primarily sucrose.

The function of Phloem sclerenchyma is-

  • to provide mechanical support.
