a homologous series is a series of compounds with same functional group and similar chemical properties in which the members of the series differ by the no. of repeating units they contain . for example, the homologous series of straight-chained alkanes begins with methane ( CH4) , ethane ( C2H6) , propane ( C3H8) , butane ( C4H10) and pentane(C5H12) .
