Researches, after years of close observation came to conclusion on what can be remotely called a joint family.
- A family that lives under the same roof. This was criticised by many scholars in modern day because few people prefer living in same building but different floors. Thus, another concept came up.
- A family that has a common kitchen. And share a common dining table. This concept was criticised as well.
- Sharing of property. Family that has joint ownership of a property.
- Common rituals. Not celebrating festivals for a year by all family members when there is a death in the family. This is often called “mailu” In South India.
- Sharing of common sentiments. Researchers believe that people who can approach family members for help or emotional stability are a joint family.
