There are four types of animal tissues: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and nervous tissue.
- Epithelial tissue - Epithelial tissues are widespread throughout the body. They form the covering of all body surfaces, line body cavities and hollow organs, and are the major tissue in glands. They perform a variety of functions that include protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.
- Connective tissue - Tissue that supports, protects and gives structure to other tissues and organs in the body. Connective tissue is made up of cells, fibers, and a gel-like substance. Types of connective tissue include bone, cartilage, fat, blood, and lymphatic tissue.
- Muscle tissue - Muscle tissue is a soft tissue that makes up the different types of muscle in animals and gives the ability of a muscle to contract. Muscle tissues vary with function and location in the body. In mammals, the three types are skeletal or striated muscle tissue; smooth muscle (non-striated) muscle; and cardiac muscle.
- Nervous tissue - Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. It is responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities. The cells in the nervous tissue that generate and conduct impulses are called neurons or nerve cells. These cells have three principal parts: the dendrites, the cell body, and one axon.
