What is meant by differential media?

Eosin methylene blue (EMB) contains dyes that are toxic for Gram positive bacteria. EMB is the selective and differential medium for coliforms. YM (yeast extract, malt extract agar) which has a low pH, deterring bacterial growth. MacConkey agar for Gram-negative bacteria.
