Undernourishment:
This arises due to lack of sufficient calories in food. A healthy person requires an average minimum diet of 2500 calories/day. These calories come from different sources of food which consist of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals etc. If the intake of calories is less than required i.e., 2500 calories, the food is said to be undernourished.
Effect of Undernourishment:
1. It results in less energy in body for doing work.
2. Lack of immunity power of body as a result body becomes susceptible to several diseases.
3. Slow body growth in children.
4. Appearance of abnormalities in body.
5. Illness such as anaemia, goitre, thyroid. etc.
2. Malnourishment:
This arises due to lack of essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins in the food. If the food being eaten by the consumer has nutrional imbalance due to lack of essential nutrient , he is said to be malnourished. Malnourishment may lead to several diseases like:
1. Anaemia: caused due to lack of iron in diet.
2. Goitre and hypothyroidism: caused due to deficiency of iodine in diet.
3. Vitamin A: Night blindness, dry skin, stone in kidney etc.
4. Vitamin B1 – Disturbed nervous and muscles system.
5. Vitamin C- Weaker bones, reduced immunity, Scurvy etc.
6. Vitamin D – Rickets
7. Vitamin E- Weaker muscles and reproductory parts etc.
Undernutrition and malnutrition mean the same.Lack of nutrients in the body.
