Contact forces are forces which are caused by two objects touching each other. There are lots of different elementary forces which physicists study such as Electric and Magnetic (both of these are components of electromagnetic force), gravitational, and nuclear forces. Contact forces are a result of electric force.

In physics, action at a distance is the concept that an object can be moved, changed, or otherwise affected without being physically touched (as in mechanical contact) by another object. That is, it is the nonlocal interaction of objects that are separated in space.
