Degree of saturation refers to the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a certain temperature. If the solvent could dissolve more solute than is present, the solution isunsaturated. ... If the solvent has more solute than the maximum that can be dissolved at that temperature, thesolution is supersaturated.
Add a little bit of salt. If the salt dissolves, the solution is unsaturated. If the salt falls to the bottom, thesolution was saturated (i.e. it had already dissolved as much as possible and cannot dissolve more.)
